Final Tryout Day is Friday

This has been the longest short week.  In addition to diving into a unique school situation, more than 90 players have dutifully attended tryout sessions, bouncing back and forth between Dresden and the HHS Turf.  The players have been wonderful, and so have the parents transporting and supporting them.  The depth of talent in this pool is extraordinarily good.  We have more than 40 players who are playing at a Varsity level.  We have another 40 who are capable of playing at the JV1 level. In many respects, we wil be fielding two varsity teams this year.  The Varsity was scheduled to play 14 games, but we have given four of them, against varsity teams from Kearsarge and Mascoma, to the JV 1.  We have given another game, against the Newport Varsity, to JV2.  We have worked very hard to establish four challenging team experiences for all four of our teams.  The Varsity and JV1 teams will play 10 games, beginning on Sept. 19th.  The JV2 and Freshman teams will play four games against other schools, and six games against each other. Parents will be allowed to watch all of our home games.  We're still working on the away game spectator situation.  All Varsity gams will be filmed, and worth watching.

We have come to the final day of tryouts.  We will post the tryout groups below.  We have slimmed down Groups One and Two. Our main focus tomorrow is watching Varsity candidates from those groups at the HHS Turf (3:15 - 4:45) , and watching JV1 candidates from Groups Three and Four at Dresden (4:00 - 5:30).   Making the Varsity and JV1 choices will automatically trigger the JV2 and Freshman choices we have been discussing. We will meet with the HHS Turf group on the hill below the P-Lot at 4:45.  We will post the teams on the Blog at 10:00.  Dress code for Friday:  Seniors: Black; Juniors: White; Sophomores: Blue; Freshmen; Green.

During the past two days, Sam Farnham and I have had conversations with more than two dozen players, and we will try to have another dozen tomorrow. We have given frank assessments, told some players that we will not be offering them Varsity spots, and told a few others that they have earned varsity status.  This process actually started Tuesday when we placed all 5.5 of our goalkeepers. Holding these conversations is an uneven, challenging process. Not one likes to receive bad news. We do our best to always list what players need to work on, and where they stand in the program, now and in many cases in the future.  We would rather do much of this work in person, rather than just posting the list on line.  We cannot talk with everyone, and respect the fact that there are players on the bubble in three locations, and some of these will not have the benefit of an in person conversation.  But we are not only going to try, but we will continue these dialogues every day for the rest of the season. We are committed to every player and every team.  We will take great joy in the improvement of every player.  Nobody's season is over tomorrow.  Every player has the opportunity to use tomorrow as a starting point.

We are already seeing great signs of camaraderie and team spirit.  For that, we thank to coaching staff.  Thanks to Varsity Associate Head Coach Sam Farnham for designing the majority of the sessions and guiding the process.  Thanks to veteran JV1 Head Coach Willie Johnson, a de facto Varsity coach for our de facto varsity team. Thanks to rookie Head Coaches Ian Caldwell (JV2) and Jason Hirschhorn (Freshmen), who both have the opportunity of working on the inside at HHS.  Thanks to assistant coaches Charlie Adams, Dan Hazlett and Sam Pych.  Their insight is a crucial part of this process, and they are just getting warmed up.

Thanks to everyone for putting up with my typos as I rush to meet the unforgiving 10:00 deadline.  Late again!
