Three Teams Take to the Road

Beginning on Friday, three out of four of the Marauder boys' teams will take to the road.  Two them will be doing it for the first time.  Here's a reminder to timing and protocols. The Freshman team will play at Woodsville High School on Friday.  Dismissal from class is at 2:15.  Under no circumstance should any player leave class before that.  At dismissal time, all players should meet in the athletic lobby, have temperatures taken, and then change into uniforms.  The bus will leave shortly after 2:30, and players driving with parents may leave at the same time. Parents will be allowed to watch the game.  Players traveling to the game on the bus may return home with parents after the game.  Varsity will play Stevens at Monadnock Park in Claremont.   The Varsity will depart at 1:00 and play at 3:00.  All players must have temperatures checked and recorded before boarding the bus.  Players traveling with parents must come to the school and have temperatures checked before drivi

Special Notice - No Training Today for JV1, JV2, Freshmen

The Dresden fields are waterlogged, and will be significantly damaged if they are used today. There will be no training for JV1, JV2, and Freshmen today.  We will resume on Thursday.  Varsity practice on the tube at 7:00 is still on.

Marauders Beat Stevens 3-0 in The Rain

The Marauders outshot Stevens 46-2 en route to a 3-0 victory at rain-drenched Merriman-Branch Field Tuesday night. Hanover, now 3-0 on the season, got goals from Dylan Kotlowitz, Henry Aspinwall and Eric Ringer, who has now scored in every Marauder game this season.  Sophomore Ty Nolon made a spectacular save on Brady Moote, his only one, to earn his first career shutout.  Stevens junior Cooper Moote was spectacular in goal, collecting 18 saves, many of them spectacular.   The game began in steady rain, but both teams shrugged off the conditions and players disciplined soccer. Knowing that they were the underdog,  Stevens devoted nine players to defense, and it took patience and great positional play by the Marauders to unlock the Cardinals. With the middle of the field clogged by defenders, most of Hanover's offense was generated on the rinks.  Flank defenders Tucker Monson and Dylan Kotlowitz got forward intelligently, supporting the wing play of Eric Ringer and Jacob Kubik-Pau

JV2 Adapts, Rallies to Beat Hartford, 4-2

It was well understood by the Hanover Boys JV2 squad that their match with Hartford's JV team wouldn't be a "Newport Round 2" and the Hartford boys proved their worth Monday evening with a strong first-half performance against Hanover.  Hanover started the match exactly where they left-off against Newport, with an endless stream of goal-scoring chances, however unlike their previous match, nothing was finding the back of the net. Augie Krawitt gave the Marauders their first 'close' look at goal with a free-kick from all of 35 yards out at the 15-minute mark. His strike cannoned off the underside of the bar and right into the path of Ayaan Ahmad who barely put his follow-up shot over the other side of the bar to keep the match scoreless. Will Taylor had the next few looks at goal, finding the Hartford keeper's arms with his first two strikes and, unfortunately, the left post with his third attempt.  The mood the match quickly flipped after a dominant firs

A Look at The Week Ahead - Important Details

We have a busy week ahead, and each team has at least one game.  Four of them are on the road, and that takes some planning.  Here is a narrative look at the game and practice schedule published last Friday. Thanks to Senior GK CJ Wheelan for fixing the formatting problem that made schedules and lists so hard to read.  CJ, by the way, was one of three National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists on the Marauder Varsity, announced just a few days ago. Congratulations to CJ, Nathan Subrahmanian, and Tom Lyons.  Can you see why we keep bragging about senior leadership? On Monday, the JV2 travels to Hartford to play the makeup game postponed from last week.  The team will depart at 3:30, and all players should immediately report to the Athletic Hallway after school to get their white away uniforms, change, and have temperatures.  Then, and only then, should they zip across the street to the Coop for a pre-game snack.  Take care of business first. On Tuesday, the Varsity boys host Stevens on t

JV1 Beats Fall Mountain Varsity 4-1 On The Turf

The young JV marauders found themselves pitted against yet another varsity team for the second time in the week. Similarly to their last game they donned masks to play on this warm Saturday down on the turf. The JV showed that they were adapt to playing with the quick speed of the turf, and would open scoring quickly. After a well earned corner by Mitch Rowley he followed it up with an equally well taken corner. Mitch struck the ball to the back post that found where Matthias Einarsson was able to be first two it and buried off his head in the third minute. The marauders continued to press the wildcats to great effect. Another ball would be won on the right flank then had Jack Gardner place ball right toward the front post that allowed Zack Tracy to run on in crowd to double the lead just two minutes later. The play ensued in similar fashion with knocking the ball around keeping space and having Fall Mountain left chasing. CMs John Reznek and Ian Press had some quality build up that

JV2 and Freshmen Battle to a Scoreless Draw/New Games Scheduled!

The concept was advanced at the start of the season that the JV2 and Freshman teams might be well-matched with each other, and occasional games between them might be a nice way to compensate for the lack of matches with other schools. Mission accomplished. A few scrimmages in practice suggested that they were indeed potentially great rivals. Thursday afternoon at The Pasture, in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd, the team teams battled to a 0-0 tie that was well-played and highly entertaining. The well-organized defense of the Freshmen held off the relentless attack of the JV2s, and goalies Trevor Lichtenstein (Freshmen) and Christian Bliz (JV2s) emerged as the stars of the afternoon. We'll let Freshman mentor Jason Hirschhord take upo the narrative from here: "Our back lines—Joseph, Justin, Sam L, George and Davey, Paul, Blake, Liam—were rock solid throughout. They pushed up the field on our attacking plays, they closed down fast, they recovered and had each others

JV1 Rallies to Beat Kearsarge Varsity 5-4

Covid-19 regional scheduling means that Hanover is matched up with a number of local snaller schools. Four of these opponents have been matched up with Marauder JV teams, in an effort to get competitive games. The system worked perfectly on a breezy Wednesday at Dresden, as the Hanover JV1 team rallied in the second half to beat the Kearsarge Varsity 5-4. Hanover took an early lead, fell behind 4-3 at halftime, and then won the game with two Jack Gardner goals, completing his hat trick. Coach Willie Johnson takes over the narrative: "Setting the stage: a bright, sunny day, the Wild West across the river in Norwich at the dusty Dresden fields. The scoring opened quickly, as Mitch Rowley fed Zach Tracy down to the touchline, and Zach fired it across the goal line to Gardner for an easy put-away, a sitter in the 4th minute. It wouldn't take long for the young Marauders to double the score. John Reznek received the ball inside the 18 from a kick-in (Covid rules), and placed

Marauders Beat Fall Mountain 7-0 on a Day of Firsts

Division One Hanover visited Division 3 Fall Mountain on Tuesday, and the result was pretty much what was expected, as the Marauders scored three timse in the first ten minutes, cleared the bench for the rest of the game, and won 7-0, outshooting the Wildcats 38-0. Yet, thanks to the coaching and discipline of Fall Mountain, the game was closwe than it might have been and constructive for both sides. Blowouts can be ugly, but this one had a decent feel for several reasons: Hanover's goals were all well-taken, and with one exception not the result of FM errors. The hosts played good defense and had a very strong goalkeeper, and Hanover actually missed a lot of sitters. Taken all together, the experience produced mutual respect on both sides. That said, the return match on Saturday at 1:00 at Merriman-Branch Field wil be given to the Marauder JV1 team in hopes of creating a more competitive game. The match was scoreless for 41 seconds. That's how long it took to work the b

News Flash! Varsity/JV1 Schedule Change/Good Sports Coverage

Later tonight, we will post the story about the Varsity's 7-0 win today at Fall Mountain. Because of the one-sided nature of the game, it's been decided that when Fall Mountain comes to Hanover on Saturday for a 1-0 game at Merriman-Branch Field, they will play JV1. As part of that transaction, the game scheduled for October 10th against Mascoma will now be a Varsity game at 1:00. Each Hanover team keeps the same number of games, and each game will hopefully be more competitive. Game report coming up soon. While we have you, we direct yourt attention to a very good way to keep up to day on Upper Valley High School sports. Although the Valley News has had to reduce coverage (smaller paper, smaller staff, much more to cover with all of the jammed-together pro sports), there is a new entity in town. The Octopus Sports Blog has already published a number of detailed, accurate accounts of Hanover sports team. If you check on the link and look, you can see that the Octopus had

Varsity Takes the Season's First Road Trip

Following a weekend of home games, the Marauder Varsity will take the program's first road trip, traveling to Fall Mountain High School for a 4:00 p.m. match. The protocols for traveling are straightforward, but it's crucial that we get them right. We'll have a dozen players traveleing with parents by car, which creates enough room on the bus, where we are required to set no more than 24 individuals, all with their own seat. Here's how it will work: All players will be dismissed at 2:00, after 6th period. They will gather in the lobby outside the the athletic hallway, and have their temoerature checked and recorded. Players traveling by car can pick up their snacks and head to the parental vehicles. Players traveling by bus will board the bus and stay in assigned seats. A seating chart will be recorded. Directions: Fall Mountain is at #122 Rt. 12A #5, Langdon, NH 03602. Take 91 south to Exit 7 and follow Rt. 11 to 12A and through Charlestown. A mile South of Ch

Practice and Game Schedule Sept. 21-26; Varsity Game Schedule

Here is the game and practice schedule for the week ahead. The JV2 game scheduled at Hartford for Thursday has been postponed, and will be rescheduled. The Varsity will play at Fall Mountain on Tuesday at 4:00. All players and coaches must be temperature checked and questioned in the athletic hall lobby prior to departure. Players/parents must contact Coach Grabill to confirm bus/parent travel plans. Parents will be allowed to be spectators at Fall Mountain. Masks and distancing are mandatory. JV1 will host the Kearsarge Varsity on Wednesday at Dresden at 3:30. All players will wear masks the entire game. Parents will be allowed as spectators with masks and distancing. The game will be played with Mass. Rules: No heading, kick-ins instead of throw ins, short corners only, no goalie kicking beyond midfield. The Freshmen and JV2 will play a formal game at Dresden on Thursday at 4:00. Freshmen will be the visiting team and wear white. JV2 wil be the home team and wear maroon.

Marauders Open With a Bang: Rally to Beat Lebanon 2-1

Every since Hanover's opening game with arch-rival Lebanon appeared on the schedule, Saturday's season opener has been hyped as a game to watch. The statewide Manchester Union Leader called it the best high school sports rivalry in the state. The entire Upper Valley press corps (Valley news reporter and photographer, and "The Octopus" a new local sports blog) was on hand. And despite that pressure, despite the distractions of a crazy, truncated, masked, COVID season, the two teams delivered a classic. After 65 scoreless minutes, Lebanon took a 1-0 lead against the run of play, only to have have Hanover score twice in the final 11 minutes to take a well-earned 2-1 victory. It was just like old times. Even though neither team had the benefit of pre-season scrimmages, the game was crisp and well-played right from the start. Hanover had the edge in play, and Lebanon was content to put men behind the ball and depend on their traditional tenacious defense. Five minu

JV1 Beats Lebanon 2-1 in Season Opener

The Marauder JV1s opened their season on Saturday with an impressive 2-1 victory over a determined Lebanon squad. Hanover dominated play and waited patiently for the goals to come, winning the match on the strength of second-half goals by Jack Gardner and Matthias Einarsson. The Marauders got strong defensive play from the entire back line, with cengter backs Owen Smith and Alex McGrath standing out. Freshman keeper Jackson McBride earned his first career win in goal. Hanover held an edge in play in the first half, and created a number of good offensive looks. The best of these was a hard shot by Jack Gardner that forced the Lebanon goalie, their varsity backup, to make a brilliant kick save. McGrath was vocal in defensive organization, and helped the Marauders switch the direction of play throuh the back. After a scoreless first half, Hanover came out on the front foot when play resumed, and took a 1-0 lead after three minuted when Gardner took a pass from left winger Jack Stadheim,

JV2 Opens Their Season With a Big Win Over Newport

Hanover 10 - Newport 0 The JV2 Marauders started their season at full speed against a small-rostered Newport side. Kick-off to the first twenty minutes were end-to-end with Hanover showing dangerous, early signs of a goal and Newport attacking equally well down the other side. The deadlock was finally broken twenty minutes and 30 (correct) Offside Calls on Hanover later when Augie Krawitt pinched the ball of a Newport defender, leaving Soren Stettenheim to race through on goal and finish the move with a little "chip" over the keeper. Ruslan Henry almost doubled the Marauders lead just a few moments later when his solo effort down the right flank ended with a shot that was just a little bit "wide" and "over" the goal, "Wover" we like to call that. Newport then put the pressure right back on Hanover with a few break-away opportunities, the best of which was spoiled by the lightning-quick reactions and recovery speed of Jackson Liu. This would n

Freshmen Start of the Right Foot; JV2 Up Next - Important Reminder!

The Freshman soccer team had the honor of kicking off the season on Thursday evening, and they turned in a masterful performance combining team defense and opportunistic offense, beating the Marauder Girls' Varsity 1-0. Oddsmakers had installed the Girls' Varsity as favorites. They are, after all, defending State Champions. They have not last since, well, since the last time they played the Freshmen. But this year's version of the frosh nine excellent players peeled off the top of the depth chart and assigned to other teams; three on Varsity, five on JV1, and one on JV2. The latter, Henry Werner, poppod up on the Freshman sidelins as an assistant coach, and did a comendable job. When the match began, the Varsity had an edge in play, but the Freshmen were organized defensively, and gave nothing away. Forsh goalkeeper Christian Blix was tested a few times, and had one outstanding save, and the half ended nil-nil. Playing with incresed confidence, the Freshmen were able

Schedule Change! / Spectator Policies Announced / Home Games Coming Up

As the opening games of the soccer season loom in the next three days, there is a significant schedule change to announce. The JV2 game against Newport High School, scheduled to be played on Friday at 4:30 at Dresden, will now be played at 5:30 on Friday at the HHS Turf. Parents and family members (2 pwer family) will be allowed to attend. We need a parent volunteer to run the scoreboard during the game. On-site instruction will be provided. Please contact Coach Grabill if you are interested. The HHS Varsity will practice on the turf after the game, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The HHS Athletic Department has announced the Spectator Policy for all home games. Spectators wil be limited to parents and immediate family members (including siblings), two per family. Each player will receive two wrist bands (not transferrable) for each game. Non-family students and away fans will not be allowed. These policies are consistent with those of other schools around the state. The full policy i

Team Photos Wednesday/The System Works/Charitable Work

All four boys' teams will have their team photos taken, and JV1 and Varsity wil also have individual head shots taken, all during their scheduled practice times. The three sub-varsity teams all received uniforms yesterday, and should arrive at practice wearing their uniforms. Players who were absent and did not received their uniforms will received them tomorrow. The JV2 and Freshman team will have their team photos taken at Dresden. The JV1 team photo will be taken at the HHS turf. Because the Varsity did not receive uniforms Tuesday, the should arrive at the turf at 6:15 sharp to receive their uniforms before their photos are taken. The Varsity did not receive uniforms Tuesday because their practice ended early. Their practice ended early because a player was injured seriously enough to require a trip to DHMC by ambulance. Fortunately, his dislocated kneecap was quickly and expertly reduced, and his recovery time will be two weeks, and is not season-ending. The reason we

Spectator and Transportation Policies Expected Soon; training Rivalries Sprout

With games looming at the end of the week, we expect to share the official Hanover High policies with regard to spectators at home games and transportation to away games coming soon. Here is what we thik they might be: We expect that parents will be allowed at home games, but it is very possible that students for all schools and visiting parents may not be allowed. That is very liokely to be the case this Saturday for the Varsity and JV1 games Saturday at the HHS Turf (Merriman-Branch Field). Because there will be other games before and after the soccer games, it will be very understandable to havce spectators limited to just parents of HHS players. All spectators will be requir4ed to wear masks. That's a Town of Hanover requirement. Parents of Freshman players will very likely be welcome at Thursday evening's 6:30 scrimmage with the HHS Girls' Varaity. Parents of JV2 players will almost certainly be welcome to the JV2 game against Newport at Dresden at 4:30 on Frida

Organization Week: Uniforms, Team Pictures, Concussion Tests, and Then Games

The first full week for the progranm will be a busy one. Three of the four teams will have their first practice session together (the Varsity got a head start on Sunday) on Monday, and begin the process of learning roles and responsibilities. Team uniforms will be given to the players on Tuesday, and they will come to training on Wednesday wearing their uniforms, and have team and individual photos taken. A number of players on all four teams need to finish their concussion testing on their home laptops/computers. Players have been sent a link to the test via e-mail. PLyers who completed htis testig laast year do not have to do so, but several upperclassmen will need to do this after two years have elapsed. Trainer Cassie Lapple is in charge of the program, and is available to ansswer playher questions. PLayers with injuries are enjoined to visit the traioning room for treatment, preferably after Noon and before the end of school. The Freshman team, coached by Jason Hirschhorn,
