JV1 Beats Lebanon 2-1 in Season Opener

The Marauder JV1s opened their season on Saturday with an impressive 2-1 victory over a determined Lebanon squad. Hanover dominated play and waited patiently for the goals to come, winning the match on the strength of second-half goals by Jack Gardner and Matthias Einarsson. The Marauders got strong defensive play from the entire back line, with cengter backs Owen Smith and Alex McGrath standing out. Freshman keeper Jackson McBride earned his first career win in goal. Hanover held an edge in play in the first half, and created a number of good offensive looks. The best of these was a hard shot by Jack Gardner that forced the Lebanon goalie, their varsity backup, to make a brilliant kick save. McGrath was vocal in defensive organization, and helped the Marauders switch the direction of play throuh the back. After a scoreless first half, Hanover came out on the front foot when play resumed, and took a 1-0 lead after three minuted when Gardner took a pass from left winger Jack Stadheim, brilliant on the flank all day, and hammered a shot into the back of the net. Lebanon refused to go quietly, and tied the game nine minutes later on a well-taken goal. The Marauders stayed calm and re-took the lead when Einarsson met Jack McGrath's corner kick at the back post and guided the ball home for a 2-1 advantage. Hanover's depth and fitness prevented any dangerous Lebanon chances in the final 20 minutes, and the Marauders finished off the game professionally, securing their first win of the season. Next up is a midweek game with Kearsarge, the first of several matches against varsity squads. The match will be an interesting challenge since the Cougars will be using Massachusetts rules. Both teams will be masked for the entire game, which won't be a problem. Almost every player on the team has played several summer league games fully masked. On the other hand, this wil be their first game with kick-ins replaciong throw ins, with no heading allowed, with goalies not being permitted to kick beyone midfield, and with limitations on corner kicks and defensive walls. No worries. It's still soccer.
